Other TMD Requirements

The TMD mass estimator above assumes a constant load acting upon the structure. However, the load amplitude often depends on the structure’s damping characteristics. For instance, in scenarios involving wind loads such as vortex shedding, the amplitude can decrease significantly with just a 1% increase in damping. Vortex shedding induces a non-linear negative aerodynamic damping. When the structural damping surpasses the aerodynamic damping, the amplitude reduces significantly. Note that the above calculator does not account for this effect.

What does a Tuned Mass Damper do?

When the structure starts to oscillate, the mass of the Tuned Mass Damper will oscillate in the opposite direction. It is a hydraulic component that turns the kinetic energy into thermal energy.
