Steel stack vibration damper
Vortex shedding can cause real damage to light structured stacks. Since nowadays engineers want to design structures as light as possible, they become more vulnerable to vortex shedding, which can cause great damage to stacks, industrial chimneys and other slender structures. Using a stack damper, any type of vibrations can be reduced significantly for a fraction of the cost of what can be achieved with local reinforcement.
A stack damper usually consist of a Tuned Mass Damper, where other types can be friction based dampers, and liquid mass dampers.
Our box demper, which containt a Tuned Mass Damper inside, is easy to install and its modulated design allows careless implementation of the system. Using this system, the chimney can be designed in a more free manner, allowing for faster project lead time.

The Solution Against Vortex Shedding
Flow Engineering has over 20 years of experience in the calculation, design and installation of Tuned Mass Dampers. Tuned Mass Dampers are designed to add damping to slender structures that are vulnerable to natural influences. They contain a mass that can oscillate horizontally. When the structure starts to oscillate, the Tuned Mass Damper will absorb the vibration energy. It then uses frictional or hydraulic component that turns the vibration energy into thermal energy, effectively reducing almost completely the vibration.
